Wearing Masks Is Still Essential Amidst New Virus Variant

It’s been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Yet, a new variant of the coronavirus is now the most common strain circulating throughout the United States. The variant is known as B.1.1.7 and studies show that it’s both more contagious and more deadly than the original SARS-CoV-2 strain. This new variant of the virus may lead to increased cases of COVID-19 which would put further strain on health care workers and resources. Therefore, it’s imperative that we collectively continue to wear masks and follow CDC guidelines to combat the new virus variant.

New COVID-19 Variant And Its Implications

What We Know

Viruses are constantly changing due to mutation, and new variants of a virus are expected over time. Sometimes variants appear and disappear without any major conflict. Other times, variants will emerge and persist to spread at a faster rate than the original virus. That’s why we must emphasize the importance of wearing masks and social distancing as we learn more about the new virus variant. So far, studies show that antibodies developed through currently approved vaccines will recognize this variant. However, this is being closely monitored as new studies are done every day.

What We Don’t Know

Scientists are actively working to learn more about the new virus variant, and more studies are needed to determine:

  • How widely this new variant has already spread
  • How the symptoms of this variant differ from the original coronavirus
  • How this variant affects existing vaccines, tests, and treatment

Until further research is done, we must continue to protect each other by wearing masks, socially distancing ourselves, and washing our hands frequently and thoroughly.

Key  Difference Between Virus Strains

One of the most concerning areas regarding the new B.1.1.7 virus strain is the implications it has on children. Beforehand, not many children were becoming infected with the original virus strain. However, that changed with the new variant as we have seen a substantial number of outbreaks within schools and school-related activities. A similar case was reported in the U.K., where this variant was first detected, in which more children were infected with B.1.1.7 than other SARS-CoV-2 variants, compared to older age groups. We must ensure that every individual, including children, wears their masks so we can eventually end this pandemic.
